Sneak peek — literally. We just received the exq Sneak peek — literally. We just received the exquisite images from D+J’s wedding which took place less than 10 days ago. The planning for the event started exactly 30 days ago. We’ll be sharing more from this very special, very intimate wedding soon, but for now, here is a taste of what’s to come. We hope you’re as pleased with the results of the top-notch team that pulled this off in three weeks as the bride and groom were when they stepped into the reception. Photography: @amandamegmiller

New name, new profile pic. I know that you’re “supposed to” use a professional headshot or a logo for your business account. And I did for as long as I’ve been here on Instagram. I’ve changed them up every so often with a “better” photo, but yesterday I changed it to this. Not very professional-looking (though taken by one of the best photographers in the business). I’m not looking at the camera. In fact, my eyes are closed. I’m not wearing something I’d wear to a meeting or when presenting in front of a group of people. I don’t look “professional” at all, really. But what I look is real. Authentic. Truly myself, lost in a moment of pure joy when the stress of everyday life left my body and I allowed myself to be free and live in the moment. And this is what I want people to see. And who I want to be more often than I am when everyday life gets in the way. If people don’t see this as professional, so what? I’m still more than capable of doing my job (and doing it very, very well), being an involved and present mother, a partner to my husband, a supportive and loyal friend, an advocate for those that need one most, and more. I am more. More than one photo can capture. So why not use one that reminds me of how I want to feel versus how I want to be viewed? Why not, indeed. Photo by @allanzepedaphoto
Announcing…Beth Bernstein Events. 14 years ago, Announcing…Beth Bernstein Events. 14 years ago, a young woman called me and asked me to plan her wedding. My response? “But I’m just a mom.” I had been a stay-at-home mom for the previous seven years and my entire identity was wrapped up in my kids. As many young mothers can attest, I wasn’t even referred to by first name most of the time. I was “Zoe’s mom”, “Jason’s mom”, or “Dan Bernstein’s wife” (my husband is a well-known sports radio broadcaster here in Chicago which is why people – including strangers – knew him by name, but not me). I was also just four months post a severe depressive episode that landed me in the hospital and in therapy twice a week (not to mention on a cocktail of meds that rivaled a $20 craft drink). This bride had seen photos of a fundraising event for my son’s preschool I had produced at the same venue at which she was getting married. That was enough for her. She told me that anyone who can plan a silent auction gala could plan a wedding. She believed in me when I didn’t. With a little encouragement (well, a lot of encouragement) from my husband, close friends, and of course my therapist, I said yes. I’m a rule follower (at least I am as an adult; my high school and college friends would beg to differ, I’m sure), so I immediately chose a name for my business, had a logo made by a graphic designer, filed as an LLC, and purchased business insurance within three weeks. My father-in-law helped me draft my contract and the rest as they say, is history. When I chose “Sine Qua Non Events” as my company name, I did so because I did not want to name my company after myself. Why? Because I did not want people to immediately associate the business with my Jewish identity. And because I wasn’t even sure who I was at that point in my life. “Sine Qua Non” is Latin for “essential or indispensable ingredient” which I thought was cool, and because I liked the letter “Q” as a design element. I quickly became “SQN Events” since no one could pronounce Sine Qua Non. As we all know, antisemitism has been on the rise in this country for the past seven years. (Continued in comments)
